FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What ClearPage Writer is, how it keeps student writing authentic, and how it fits into your classroom.

What is ClearPage Writer?

ClearPage Writer is an essay-writing workspace for middle school, high school, and college classrooms. Students write with an AI coach, and teachers see how the writing actually happened, analyzed for authenticity, alongside each submission.

Does the AI write essays for students?

No. The coach asks questions, suggests directions, and gives feedback, but it never produces text for the student. The student does the writing.

How does ClearPage Writer detect AI use and verify authenticity?

It analyzes the writing process, not just the finished text. ClearPage captures how a piece came together, including drafts over time, active writing time, typing activity, and a paste log, and evaluates those signals together for patterns consistent with genuine composition, transcription of text written elsewhere, pasting, and automated input. Teachers see the evidence and the patterns, and they make the judgment. There is no AI-probability score.

Couldn't a student have AI write the essay somewhere else and retype it into ClearPage?

Retyping text is not the same as composing it, and the two leave different trails. ClearPage evaluates multiple process signals together rather than relying on any single one, and it surfaces patterns consistent with transcription or automated typing to the teacher along with the full process record. We don't publish the specific signals or thresholds, because doing so would make them easier to game. As with any academic-integrity evidence, ClearPage gives educators evidence to review rather than accusing a student automatically.

How is it different from Turnitin or GPTZero?

Tools like Turnitin and GPTZero scan finished text and estimate the probability it was AI-generated, a guess that can produce false positives. ClearPage Writer instead analyzes how the writing was produced, so authenticity comes from evidence about the process rather than a guess about the result.

What grade levels is ClearPage Writer for?

Middle school, high school, and college classrooms (grades 6–12 and college).

Does it work with Google Classroom and Canvas?

Yes. ClearPage Writer connects to Canvas (via LTI) and Google Classroom, so teachers can assign and sync grades from the tools they already use.

How do teachers get started?
